Anxiety and anxiety-related disorders (AARD) are notable risk factors for alcohol use problems and their co-occurrence results in tremendous health costs and societal burden. Psychological treatments that integrate cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) skills for substance use disorders with CBT interventions for AARD have demonstrated success. However, adaptive tailoring of interventions is required to ensure optimal treatment outcomes. Digital phenotyping refers to a method for collecting digital self-report and passively collected health data using smartphones. Digital phenotyping provides data on therapeutic processes as they unfold in an individual’s everyday life, helping to create data-driven decision-making tools that tailor and adapt treatments for complex symptom profiles, such as co-occurring AARD and alcohol use problems. However, examples of such data-driven tools are limited. This clinical trial aims to test the use of digital phenotyping and person-specific models as a data-driven decision-making tool to personalize treatment. This pilot, three-group, parallel, randomized clinical trial RCT will test the feasibility of a personalized CBT skills-based interventions compared to two control conditions. In the personalized condition, the therapist will review identified influential factors from the person-specific model, treat these factors using CBT skills, and track them using digital phenotyping platforms – testing a data- driven method for personalizing and adapting the content of each session. Results from this study will test the relative efficacy of personalization and personalization method, respectively, and will inform next steps around the use of digital phenotyping data to personalize treatment and develop digital health interventions.
